Off-Grid and Island Power Systems
An island pays for every litre of diesel twice - once for the fuel, once to ship it. SiRay replaces most of that fuel with sun and stores it, keeping the genset for the monsoon.
What Makes an Island Site Different
-
Fuel logistics
Every litre is barged or flown in.
-
Salt and humidity
Enclosures and coatings must be specified for it.
-
Limited civil works
No heavy plant, short weather windows.
-
Noise and emissions
Guests and regulators both notice.
-
Monsoon and cyclones
The system must ride out weeks of low irradiance.
How SiRay Answers Each One
-
Fuel
PV-priority dispatch cut diesel use by 50-70% on a Southeast Asia island resort (see the case study).
-
Enclosure
C&I cabinets and containers are IP54; site the battery in a ventilated, shaded position.
-
Civil works
Containerized BESS arrives wired and tested; the on-site work is a foundation and a cable.
-
Noise
The genset runs fewer hours, and fewer hours is less noise.
-
Weather
Size the battery for autonomy days, not hours; the genset covers the tail.
Typical Configuration
Scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Site | PV | BESS | Diesel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort | Matches daytime base load | One to two days of autonomy | Retained as backup |
| Village | Community base load plus water pumping | Overnight autonomy | Retained as backup |
| Island utility | Utility-scale array | Multi-MWh containerized | Peak and reserve only |
A Microgrid We Built
Southeast Asia island resort: 580 kW PV, over 1 MWh containerized BESS, diesel retained as backup, 24/7 supply, 50-70% less diesel.

Common Questions
What is a solar-storage-diesel microgrid?
A solar-storage-diesel microgrid is a small-scale generation and distribution system that combines photovoltaic arrays, battery energy storage and diesel generators under one Energy Management System. It runs independently in island mode or in parallel with the utility grid, switches between sources automatically and can black-start the site after a full blackout.
Can a microgrid run without any grid connection?
Yes. SiRay microgrids are designed for island mode, in which the system forms its own voltage and frequency through a grid-forming PCS or genset. They also provide black-start, restarting the site after a complete blackout without any external supply.
What does SiRay need to size a microgrid?
SiRay needs the site's load profile (what must run, at what power, for how long), the grid situation (no grid, weak grid or stable grid), the site location and solar resource, and any existing generation. From that data SiRay simulates PV yield, battery dispatch and fuel saved, then returns a quotation with a bill of materials.
